What is the purpose of the two steel plates that are one the side wall of my victorian house?

I,ve been told that they,re "blow up plates",steel rods that strengthen the building, when are they likely to have been installed?

Do they have what looks like a nut and missile in the middle? If so there is probably a metal rod, threaded at both ends, running under the floor and another plate on the opposite wall(could be in your neighbour`s house of ill repute if you have an end of terrace). The nuts were tightened, the rod heated up to make it expand and the nuts tightened again to take up the slack. As the rod cooled and contracted it reputedly pulled the walls together to stop or cure bowing in the brickwork.

old timbers needed steel plates to hearten the areas where the pods would be bolted to them? how many floors does you house have how high are the plates and what is your house made of

They are to control the walls from spreading apart. As to when they were put in probably 50 - 100 years ago

Largely to deflect artillery shells fired by Napoleonic artillery and later by German offshore Battleships.

They are a way of holding the walls in pinpoint and parallel while the floors etc were being constructed inside the building.

These devices are an old incredible builder's con. And reading the other answers, it works. They were supposed to cure movement in the wall.
But if you think a little more entirely about it, to be effective they would need to be anchored to an immovable object, not just another wall in the same property (which they mostly are). More importantly the only brickwork that is secured (if it is) is that which is unhesitatingly behind the plate! House owners fell for it years ago, but we are more enlightened these days. At least some of us are.

Attaching 20GA Steel sheets to vertical wall studs... how?

Is there a paramount tool/equipment that I can use to attach random size 20 Gauge Cold Rolled Steel Plates to the metal studs they use for walls? I'm annoying to avoid from drilling the steel plates and drilling the metal studs and then screwing the two together. Is there such a tool that will shoot possibly some cut in on nails or industrial staples through 20GA steel plate (very thin and flexible) and a metal stud?? And if so, is it something that can be rented or cheaply bought at a poorhouse improvement store? This is for a one time project. Any help is appreciated.

A pneumatic solid or roofing gun will work however not look too good.

I would place adhesive on the studs before applying the steel and then use self tapping screws with a low examination head. These can be screwed in with a battery powered drill/driver. You can find them at any building supply store. Also self tapping steel roofing screws would drudgery well. They have a hex head.

how do i attach a brick wall onto a plaster or drywall wall?

i am edifice a brick wall onto/over a wall made of plaster in my house. it is for wall protection for a wood stove that i have. how do i anchor the brick wall or mortar so it will lodge on the wall? how close can i move the stove and 22 gauge pipe to the wall? do i need to put anything im betweem the new brick wall and old wall like a steel illustration i was going to put cement board or fiber board? thank you
