Torque is important for many things. If you are measuring Horsepower, torque is the twisting operative exerted by an engine on a shaft usually measured in foot-lbs if the english system.

If your torque tester measures 120 ft-lbs , That altogether means your engine is twisting the shaft with 120 lbs of pressure with your wrench having a length of One foot from the center of the thrust.
