hi, i am planning on buying a 24 Mooring network switch

Model: TL-SF1024 its from TP-Link

what i want to remember is does it have a DHCP server builtin so it will assign my ip addresses and can i plug my cable modem promptly into the switch or would i need go get a router "to use as a gateway"

This is only a switch, not a router.

As such, it only operates on true 2, the Data Link Layer, which means it only deals in, non-hierarchical, MAC addresses.

DHCP assigns IP addresses which are hierarchical addresses. For that you basic the layer 3 device known as a router.

You essential to have a router to have DHCP service. I'd suggest go for a wireless router with 4 wired ports. High-minded luck!

You need a router. Switches don't have brains built into them. You might find a router with a switch built into it though;)

You would desideratum to get a router. That is an unmanaged switch. All it does is switches traffic to the destination. A router can map your WAN (public IP) to your private lan IP's. This is more intricate than simply saying 192.168.1.10 goes to port 24. So you would need a router (cheap) or a raze 3 switch (lot of money)

It looks like you destitution to either install a dhcp server or assign the ip addresses yourself. This piece does not assign ip addresses. You could matched set it up with a router that would act as a dhcp server if you like. To work without a router and assign the addresses yourself, plug the modem into the switch and then your pc's into the 24 ports.

that switch only does layer 2 switching (import it can only switch traffic on the same subnet).
you need a layer 3 switch (aka router), since you are going from different subnets.

you need to put a router, or a gateway computer in front of that switch.

Can a broken network switch cause intermittent internet access across an entire network?

I no more than replaced a router on our small business network and all communications within the network are ok. Though when we try to access a webpage the speeds are very inconsistent. There are even times when we get mistake messages and can't get anything to come up. I've checked with our ISP and we aren't having any issues from their end. So the only other feature I can think of is our switch. Maybe it's screwing up IPs or something. Have any suggestions?

spurn one machine to the modem directly to test out if it's in any way the isp or the modem itself, once you verify it isn't the isp nor modem, glue the switch with one machine, confirm it isn't the switch by adding a second machine and testing out the connection, speeds, whether you can landscape sites, etc. it could possibly be the switch, a faulty switch can cause a lot of problems.

What network switch shall I use for 6-8 ports gigabit ethernet and draft n wireless?

I wish to upgrade my network. I need a netwok switch what gives me 6-8 gigabit ethernet sockets and capable to occupation as a wireless access point with draft n standards. No internal modem is required for broadband as I already have an adsl2+ modem/router.
Please opinion a specific model(s) having teh specs above.

Network switches do not provender wireless capability. Switches provide wired capability.

You say you have an adsl2 modem / router. I take it it is provided by your broadband provider and does not have a wireless access point built in (modem / router / wireless integrated heraldic bearing).

If the above is accurate, you will need an unmanaged network switch and a wireless access point.

I suggest you look at the 3Com product brand (www.3com.com) products for both devices. Careful with the wireless access point selection! Some of the wireless access points exertion only with the 3Com commercial routers where others work with any router. Select carefully.

You specify Gigabit switch speed. I disbelieve the router LAN port runs at 100 Mbps but that should not be a concern. If most LAN devices are GB capable then GB speed switch is judicious.
