What happens if I plug a gigabit switch into a 100 megabit router?

Assuming that I am using Cat 5e and gigabit NICs, if I close up a gigabit switch into a 100 megabit router, the segment attached to the switch will operate at gigabit speed, correct?

The switch will alter to 100M on the router port.The rest of the system will work at Gig.

Will my bandwidth decrease if I use a wireless g router for dhcp and a gigabit switch for ethernet?

I have a linksys wrt54g for wireless and a guideline gigabit switch for ethernet. The linksys only has 10/100 ports so I am not sure if my entire network would be slowed down using the linksys for dhcp.
I suppose you guys misunderstand me. I am not talking about bandwidth inregards to downloads from the internet but the throughput of file transfers on my network over the gigabit switch. Say if I toughened a server with a gig enet card and did the dhcp using that via using the linksys would I see a slow down because the linksys only uses 10/100 enet?

Only if your bandwidth is greater than 100Mbps :) .. which is unimaginable....

Barely curious what people think are the best 24 port gigabit switch... we don't need to have it be managed, so with that said we're looking for something adequately inexpensive, but not cheap. We just need a good fast switch with no frills.

Knotty question, you're asking for the best, but also something fairly inexpensive. Is this for small business use? Cisco is the superb, but also a bit more expensive than the others, but you get what you pay for. If you want the best 24-port gigabit switch, check out the Cisco WS-C2960G-24TC-L, list cost 3295. If that's way more that what you're looking for or expecting to pay, next best option but not as high-end or expensive is the Linksys SRW2024. Also (afterthought)... In between the Cisco 2960 and the Linksys, you also have the Catalyst Say 500 series. 24 10/100 and a pair of 10/100/1000 uplinks for $795 list price.
