A router is a "well-educated switch" A router will read the packet headers on the Ethernet messages and pass though messages to the computer on the network they are addressed to (internal LAN) or send and come into them from the Internet using Network Address Translation. By doing this the router allows more than one computer to share an Internet IP greet
The router also manages your home network by assign IP addresses using DHCP and passing DNS server bumf to the clients

All a switch does is move packets of data very efficiently between machines on a network.

You can have multiple switches on a network, but there is only one quick router per network.

You want to get a router for that matter, not just a switch. But i think what you have now is a router (i dont think there is a 5-port deflection). Maybe there are 4 ports for the switch, and one port is for your DSL connection.

Most new routers nowadays need no configuration if you'll only require to share one connection to two laptops. Just connect them with the UTP cable and basically that's it.

It would be for about 14 people.

as wish as your using a store and forward type switch, and it has enough ethernet ports. you should be fine. Just keep your ethernet cables sawn-off (physical distance tends to increase latency) around the 10-40 meter range.
your biggest unsettle with lan gaming is latency and throughput. You should have enough bandwidth to drive the game with 10,000,000 b/s
you should be fine.
