Ethernet switch?

I have a honest ethernet source coming out of my wall that is linked to my desktop on another level. Could I simply plug the ethernet cord coming out of my obstruction into an ethernet switch to create multiple internet connections for devices in my room?
does this act as a router?

Yes, it can occupation as that. As i solved the same problem several days ago.

Approved, you can just purchase a DLink, Cisco (Linksys), etc. switch and then connect your ethernet cable to the jack.

If you have a router it will drudgery fine. If your ISP provides multiple IP addresses in your plan, which you can check by calling tech support, yes, it will calling, but if not, you must purchase a router. I recommend an AirPort extreme

Can I use a switch to add more Ethernet ports to a router?

I have a D-relation DIR-655 gigabit router, but I need more than 4 gigabit ports. If I connect a D-link 5 port gigabit Ethernet switch to the router, will the ports on the switch get internet access, or do the devices have to be connected later on to the router?

I grasp you have to use the ethernet cord or wireless adapter to connect the xbox360 to xbox live but how would you connect my modem the ethernet string and a low end switch so that I get internet through my modem and xbox live through the ethernet switch at the same time.

Braze an ethernet cable from your modem to the switch
Connect another ethernet cable from the switch to your x-box
