Watched a program on a 16 yr old lad who had a gastric combination fitted overseas, with medical back up in his own country on returning home, I've also heard about the duodenal switch that is a longer op but which is the most first or which has the most complications?
Both gastric banding and roux-en-y (or duodenal switch) sugery have complications associated with them. The end denouement of the latter is basically short-bowel (or dumping) syndrome, that is, by decreasing the length of the small intestine, and abide size, you limit the amount of nutrients which can be absorbed, as well as decreasing the quantity of food taken in. The complication classify can be higher for the duodenal switch because the surgery is more involved and is not reversable.
Gastric banding, depending on the proceedure, can be reversed, however, there is a danger of gastric necrosis from the application of the band, or permanent damage to the stomach as a result of adhesions or scarring.
If I were to chose between the two, I would rather the gastric gather, which still permits the duodenum to function normally, and thus reduce the need for supplements to replace the fat soluable vitamins extinct in the duodenal switch procedure. The other embarrasing side effects of dumping syndrome are also eliminated. Both surgeries should only be performed by a bariatric surgeon with a excess deal of experience in these particular surgeries, and not just any old general surgeon.
