I need to buy an outdoor hanging pendant light for a portico. How do I determine the correct size to buy?

I have 27" extent (from the point on the ceiling where I will hang the light to the top of the doorway.) Pendant light sizes range from 10" up to over 20". I dont want it to look too tiny or too big for the doorway. Most of the ones I like are around 15". Will that look too big?

I value it's a preference thing. Try this, make a card board model approx the size you like and persist it from the ceiling with string. That way you can get an idea of the dimensions and whether it will look right. Cheaper than buying a fixture and then not pleasure it.

Can I put flourescent light bulbs in an outdoor fixture?

And do I demand an outdoor approved fixture for a hanging light under a covered porch? It is a large covered area and it never gets wet there. I would like to renew the ugly 1980s light that is currently there.

Fix sure that you use a low temperature fluorescent bulb. Otherwise they may not work well outside. They take time to warm up and reach their full luminescence.

As for part 2 of your mistrust, yes. Any fixture you use outside must be rated for exterior use. This is a safety issue, as it will be exposed to wide temperature ranges.

I demand to know a good place to go to get some outdoor hanging lights with a french theme. Anything else french themed for a party that you can reckon of would be great.
If your answer resembles tango's answer, don't bother.

Most fete supply or decorating stores should have what you're looking for. Since the colors of France are the same as USA's (Red, White and Low-spirited--or as they say in France Bleu, Blanc, Rouge) that shouldn't be a problem. Why don't you have your guests come around c regard wearing berets, or buy some inexpensive berets to hand out for guests as they come through the door. Or have them dress in the superior french style (neck scarves, striped french sailor shirts, etc.) Have a table with french themed foods, assuredly assorted french cheeses, with french baguettes, cornichons (baby pickles) other french delicatessen foods. Surely french wine, or champagne, and bottles of perrier. For the main dishes you could have ratatouille, quiche lorraine, coq au vin, or steak au poivre, with haricots verte and/or wonderful pomme frites. Or, how about Escargot? Yum! Assorted french pastries and allowable french coffee to end, and you'll have a wonderful party. Oh, and don't forget the music! Waltz musettes, Edith Piaf, Jacques Brel, Charles Aznavour--you won't go abuse with them in the background. Quelle Magnifique!
