How to educate staff, children, etc about energy efficient lightbulbs?

I m at a daycare and we are going to swith all our lightbulbs to energy efficeint flourescent bulbs and change all batteries to rechargable. How can we tutor our staff, children, and community about energy efficient lightbulbs and how can we get them involved in the switch?

Totally basic.
Explain to them, that when their child leaves the hallway light on for 10 hours, with a normal bulb,it costs £1.00
If the same develop was left on with an energy saving bulb,it would only cost £0.20p.
Similar thing with rechargeable batteries,1 alkaline battery-£0.50p
Rechargeable battery£2.00.-But you can re-tax it 500 times.

Don't. Flaming lightbulbs are much more pleasant and don't contain mercury.

You won't really accomplish much to "save the locale" by buying different lightbulbs.

I muse on the children are too young to be interested because they have no experience to compare it to. They will figure out the concept when they are older.

The staff may be interested but I cannot imagine of a way to generate genuine enthusiasm. Perhaps a glass jar filled with the $ saved each month (or a graph or chart) and a pizza honour for them?

Energy efficient lightbulbs contain mercury. How do we safely dispose of them?

There is a word blurb on the yahoo homepage with only part of the information provided. A video link is to a BBC news broadcast raises the mercury preposterous. There is also a link to a report on migraines triggered by these new bulbs. When these bulbs break there is a strong smell of blazing which can be scary.

I prefer the incandescent bulb which lowered heating bills because they produced heat thus lowering greenhouse gas emissions produced by by coal, oil, wood and other furnaces.

The easiest way to find out where to safely recycle brief fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs) is to go to http://www.lamprecycle.org or http://www.epa.gov/bulbrecycling. These sites will domestics you find recycling centers in your area, and they also provide a lot of safety information about CFLs.

One thing to consider is that while CFLs hold trace amounts of mercury, incandescent bulbs actually release more mercury into the atmoshpere because they use up 75% more power from coal power plants. Coal power plants publicity mercury as well as carbon dioxide, so by using more energy with incandescents, you're actually doing more wrongdoing to the environment than with a CFL that can be recycled.

There's a company - Earthmate - that sells CFLs with only 1 mg of mercury. It's putative to be 75% less mercury than regular CFLs. You can check them out at http://www.earthmatelighting.com. This company is super environmental. Even their boxes are made with 100% stake-consumer waste.

What are the negative features of energy efficient lightbulbs?

They are cantankerous. They don't turn on right away. They are ugly. They give off a wierd color light. They are ugly. They hummmmmmmmmmmmmm.

Did I acknowledge they are ugly?
