Gas Furnace Basics

Before we can examine topics such as what species of residential gas furnace to position, support, troubleshooting and depot issues, we first shortage to talk about some underlying gen. Efficaciousness and plan considerations monkey business a big r in determining what furnace you currently have installed, whether to upon purchasing a new item, and with what features. The AFUE or Annual Stimulate Utilization Dexterity, expressed as a share, is a assessment of a furnace's effectiveness in converting nutriment to vitality over an complete heating flavour. For admonition, a furnace with an 85% AFUE would be described as one that produces 0.85 BTU of torridness for 1 BTU of gas consumed. The higher the AFUE rating, the higher the adroitness. Federal law requires most residential gas furnaces manufactured and sold in the U.S. today to have a reduced AFUE of 78%. Portable poorhouse furnaces and units with capacities under 45,000 Btu are permitted more cut AFUEs. In most instances, the pattern of the gas furnace is...

residential gas furnaces?

My furnace had gone out the evening before. I waited till morning to relight it. I turned gas off for about 10 minutes. Put the button to pilot , let the aviatrix burn for roughly 1 minute. Turned the knob to on. The burner did not kick on right away. Rather than it did a flash explosion out of the access door and into my face. Like a dummy I did not put the cover back on before I turned the projection. I am just curious if you can get blinded or your eyes burnt from that. Luckily I just had my facial hair, eyebrows, eyelashes burned. No waste to my face. I have lit many a furnace and hot water tank and never experienced this before. Learned my lesson this time.

always master to light a pilot with tstat off or switch to furnace off,or both.....i guess you already know that now,,you arent the only one this has happened to,,many younger techs learn the merciless way too...fortunately it doesnt usually result in blindness,,just embaressment...i think this is because the shockwave hits you merely before the flame comes out,so you instinctively close your eyes, but dont have enough time to move...anyway,,it should not have done that...either your burners or pilot needs cleaning,,,if either is spotted, can cause "delayed ignition"...or only the part of the pilot that contacts the thermocouple got lit,not the part that sits over the burner,,again in any way due to dirty pilot...the dalayed ignition may have cleared the problem but still get it checked,,best to leave off in the meantime decent in case, but thats your call.......dan

haha, yeppers. You don't have to see very many delayed ignitions to learn you never withstand in front of them when you fire them off the first time.

I always turn off the power switch when lighting a pilot on a furnace. The switch is usually record enough to force you to stand up and away when firing it off.

One problem with what you did is that a gas valve goes from full closed to full open. So when you cycle the knob on top to on with the valve open you are opening it more slowly that always puts in a little fuel before it fires up so a "bit" of flare up is standard.

But I would suspect your pilot is dirty and small or it is not located right to get that much of a delayed ignition.

But I have known more than a few newby techs that have strayed their eyebrows. Some never work on a furnace again.

Luckily we blink so fast that it protects the eyes. I have known only one that had only a negligible injury to the eye. That was from an oil furnace that can be more dangerous that way because it can build up a mist of oil floating in the air or smoldering oil that lacks enough oxygen to waste. Then opening the inspection port adds that air and you can get a three foot flame shooting out of those. And that is after you turned it off.

I always stand to the side now after seeing that.

You have moral been initiated in being an HVAC tech. ;-)

I'm looking for an efficient, reliable, long-lasting residential gas furnace and AC for use in Minnesota.?

To substitute my old system.

Repress out Carrier and or Trane A/C &heaters.

In a residential split gas furnace elec. AC system if the AC goe out should the gas furnace still operarte?

Please purify.... AC can mean air conditioner, or Alternating Current. If you mean AC as in electricity, no, the furnace won't occupation.
