Know of any instrument to monitor the residential furnace performance?

Hi! In my efforts to mark down my home heating bill, I am trying various things. It would help me if I can find an inexpensive instrument (<$30) that will bank on and tell me how many times the furnace has turned on in a certain period of time. Btw. I have a 1980's natural gas passionate furnace.

I had a Cramer 635G (on-field prices are around $45 for new, $20 for used) elapsed time meter measuring to 0.1 transcript kicking around. I wired it in parallel with the oil burner blower and manually check the reading during my daily morning habitual.

Occasionally I'll compare the daily run time with the NWS degree-day totals to get an overall k value for the brothel, which we keep at 60°F 24 hours a day.

You should be able to do the same thing by wiring in parallel with the gas valve solenoid.

A digital thermostat (some models...Orion is one) will show the energy consumption you use in a day, in hours and minutes.
The cost is around 60$ dollars though.

This may end up costing you a wee bit more than you wanted, but I've done this myself to retort the same sort of question around the house.

Buy a simple temperature datalogger, which are now available for between $30 and $75 (depending on if you buy them tolerant of, or new, or whatever). Put the datalogger somewhere that gets quite hot when the furnace is on, but cools down when the furnace is off. Perhaps on or above a hot air register.

Once you download the facts, you'll know exactly when your furnace comes on and off.

And if you're the sort of person who goes for this group of thing, you'll find all kinds of other cool stuff to measure around the house too. How much does the refrigerator temperature incline when the door is opened? How long does it take the house to get down to the lower temperature when your programmable thermostat kicks in? How hot does your car in reality get in the summer in the mall parking lot? For geeks (like me) these little gizmos are a blast.

It's been a while since I've bought something like this, and I got one for unregulated rid of at a work event. But I found a couple of gizmos on ebay that seem to be what you're looking for. I also found the same gizmo retail. And these look improved than mine because they don't seem to require the purchase of some propriatary software to get at the data. Check out the links below, or do a little searching for an EL-USB Temperature Details Logger. (Note that the EL-USB-LITE, which is the one on ebay right now, has a fixed sampling rate of 30 minutes, too covet to be a whole lot of fun.)

residential gas furnaces?

My furnace had gone out the gloaming before. I waited till morning to relight it. I turned gas off for about 10 minutes. Put the button to pilot , let the aviator burn for roughly 1 minute. Turned the knob to on. The burner did not kick on right away. As contrasted with it did a flash explosion out of the access door and into my face. Like a dummy I did not put the cover back on before I turned the projection. I am just curious if you can get blinded or your eyes burnt from that. Luckily I just had my facial hair, eyebrows, eyelashes burned. No throw to my face. I have lit many a furnace and hot water tank and never experienced this before. Learned my lesson this time.
