the is what an oil furnace look and perspicacious like the is a olsen/airco branded lowboy unit.

My dad is planning to substitute for his oil-fired furnace. Someone had mentioned to him the existence of a dual fueled unit, one that can use wood or oil. He has a good amount of firewood at one's disposal, so, the only cost associated with it would be harvesting the dead wood and splitting it.
Does anyone have any experience with such a unit? How well does it warm up when using wood vs. using oil? Can you run it for extended periods on oil (say, if you are on vacation for a few weeks)? Compared to replacing with an oil-only section, would a dual-fuel unit have a positive, negative or no effect on the value of the home (ie. is having a dual fueled portion viewed negatively by potential buyers, since he is also considering putting his house on the market in another year or two)?
Thanks!
Dual encourage furnaces are very inefficient when using the oil or gas burners and can be a maintenance problem for these components. Some where poorly designed and when throwing wood in you could do wound to the burner chamber for the oil and gas side and one I worked on the oil burner was below the wood door so it was often damaged when wood fell on it.If you are common to burn mostly wood and only oil once in a while and the oil burner is up high and out of the way of the wood it might be a good choice. If not you are going to burn a lot of oil compared to a one fuel furnace.I would say to install a wood furnace next to an oil furnace but that would require a second chimney because a duel stimulate furnace is the only way to burn wood and oil in one chimney by code.
First, let me say that I am NOT looking at doing this. But I am curious about it. Since gasoline has a lower flash point than fuel oil (which is essentially diesel fuel) and it burns hotter than ammunition oil, what would happen if gasoline was substituted for fuel oil in an oil fired furnace/boiler?
Any furnace experts out there have an idea about this? Again, I'm not current to do this. It's just an idle curiousity question.
Furnace oil is very equivalent to diesel fuel and you're right, gasoline has a much lower flash point.
The excessive animate would compromise the integrity of your fire box while the atomized gasoline would travel up your exhaust system (chimney or B vent).
As the furnace exploded, people casing would see flame shoot out of your chimney. Any creosote in the vent would ignite and the resulting chimney fire would destroy it.
The "huff back" taking place in the furnace would ignite any flammable material in close proximity to the furnace which if unchecked would spread throughout the order.
In short, you would see a fireball shoot out the furnace access panel and the chimney at the same time. As soon as the passion reached the fuel reservoir, you would see that launch from its stationery position and travel to the point that it exploded.
I'm to death to hear that you're not planning to try this at home.
I necessary details on how to remove the old one and how the hot water for the heat is hooked up. Also how do I keep the entire heat system from draining while I do this?
No way around not draining your system. The hot salt water coil sits inside your boiler and cold water runs through the coil and absorbs the excitement and gets the water hot. The incoming water to the coil has no contact with the water in the boiler as it is a loop system. In old boilers you will have a lot of rust and corrosion so you will have to be thorough removing the bolts that hold it to the boiler or they snap off, then you have a problem of not being able to seal the coil if too many snatch up off. Before trying to loosen them give them a good wire brushing and dose of WD40 or some other rust buster. Make convinced you have the right replacement coil or you will be down because the coils are designed to fit inside the boiler. Steam and hot water are about the same. The snake gets it's heat from the hot water in your heating system.
