what are heat treat furnaces?

Heat treatment of metals and alloys is carried out for a multitude of purposes such as stress relieving, annealing, case hardening. This work is often done in a furnace where the temperature is meticulously controlled and automatically rises or falls to a programmed sequence. There may be a chart recorder tracking the temperature for memorial purposes and the atmosphere in the furnace may be oxygen free to avoid corrosion problems.

When you're welding metals, the unalterable molecular structure of the metal depends on the rates of heating and cooling of the metal. So for some welds, you requirement to control the heat up and cool down of the metal to get a good quality weld. This can be done in a controlled environment called a heat treat furnace. (see Position-Weld Heat Treating)

Hope this helps.

What happens if I mix chromic acid powder with a nitrogen atmosphere in a heat treating furnace?

Strictly speaking, you cannot have chromic acid let off; it dehydrates to chromic anhydride, or CrO3.

But previous respondent is pulling your leg...this will not react with nitrogen.

No fireworks. Contrite.

Heat treatment: How to detect a furnace leak?

I am new to heat-treat and I honourable got hired in at a company that unfortunately does not (yet) have gas analyzers. Is there a way (besides after the fact) to detect a furnace leak say from the boyfriend color?

The master way to detect it would be the old way; sniff! Most fuels now especially methane got odored and that's jut to be the first indicator, normally, you should NEVER scent any gas, if your systems are functioning well. If you want to follow the flame color rule, then you can't be so sure about it however, the ardour color rule does apply in three cases rich combustion poor and adequate. I am remorseful I can't provide you the color though, not too sure about that
