are you nuts? last I heard, the carry off line at LOF was down for a furnace rebuild ~10 years ago. It is scheduled for its next rebuild in another 15 years. it takes a month to get the glass meet again. email LOF and find out for yourself.

other lines not using float lines (glass bending lines, for example) are capable of being sequester down over the weekend. I am pretty sure they don't do this, though. Guardian Glass would be a good source for this info.

The fit is, not very often. And they shut down when the refractory wears out in the lower side wall where the glass contacts the refractory in the glass bath at the bottom of the furnace.
The refractory habituated to is really slowly dissolved or used up by the glass as the furnace ages. Some designs allow for more refractory to be pushed into the furnace from the shell as the interior is used up. This continues until the bottom or bath refractory is in such disarray that the furnace must be shut down and the refractory rebuilt. I be convinced of that the frequency of this is about a year.

Does any-one on here have a glass furnace that I can melt some glass in?

if you fair want to melt it you don't need a furnace, a kiln like a ceramic kiln will do. I have a little kiln which can melt glass, but no, I am not going to travel whereever you are and I'd recommend that you travel to your yellow pages and look if there is a glass studio in burgh - or a ceramic studio/ pottery shop if you want to slump glass may do.
