Chandelier Installation?

I have an older digs built in the 50's. My new chandelier has a metal cord that is the ground which connects to a screw. My house has thick copper coach sticking out which I think is the ground. Should I connect the house ground to the chandelier ground under the same screw? There is a burnt evaluate next to the screw and now I am worried. Light will not turn on. Maybe I burnt up the fixture???? Please help!

the rout thing to do is let a licenced professional look at it.but if you insist on do it yourself, heres your anser. In the 1950's the type of wiring was called nob and tubing.Which didnt have a base.if you can still see the color on the wire, white for nutrel and black for hot (in most cases). If your wire has a jacket around a three wire configuration, with one being a unclothed, the bare is your ground. BUT IF YOUR HOUSE HAS NOT BEEN UPDATED IN THE LAST 15 TO 20 YEARS,YOU REALY NEED TO GET IT LOOKED AT call around generaly a well-disposed electrician will not charge you if he thinks he has a rewire. if he says you need it get him to show you why.(i.e. brittel insulation on wire in attic. splices in wire not in boxs and the like)its mostly commen since. charitable luck.

Call an electrician. It's haler to be safe than sorry. You could call an electrical supply store first they might be able to help you for free.

if you are seeing a burnt single out its because there may have been a hot wire that was hooked up to the ground, this may have caused a burnt fuse not allowing the light to turn on.you can secure the house ground under the same screw if its the ground bare(copper in color) with no coating on it under the same screw. you might prerequisite to check your fuses though. (bare wire goes onto metal box where chandelier hangs)
