Appliance Recycling

Do retailers of washing machines now have an obligation to take the old appliance away?

I present somewhere that some new recycling directive meant that the retailer of white goods had an obligation to take the old appliance away and recycle it responsibly.

Whats the act on here?

thanks
Sorry. I should have added.. I'm in the UK

No they are not forced to take them away yet. But, never say never. In the meantime, only buy white goods from retailers who will. They may get the message then.

I yearn! Some will offer the service but at a charge.

I don't have knowledge of if they have to, but it's a good idea since they can scrap it and get money for it. Just extra profit for them

It may depend on your position. Our state doesn't require any company to extend haul-off services, but we own an appliance business and have always offered it as a favor to the patron. I think most companies do.

As for whether or not the consumer is required to forfeit any property when they buy a new one...that's very peculiar to me. I would definately value that to be a total injustice.

We always allow someone to come pick up the discarded appliances and either repair them or use them for the metal. Nothing is wasted. Everything is remade.

It's very proficient.

If you are in the US, you can check the laws for your state online.

Ack, with the honorarium they are giving for steel at recycling centers why would you let someone have it for free? That is like handing them money out of your pocket. If you are that free with your boodle, send me some. The last load of steel I took to the recycling center netted me about 300 US dollars which isn't bad for an hour or two's importance of work.

NO but state them you will not buy a new one unles they do changes their mind remarkably rapidly I've found!

No they are not grateful to take them away yet. But, never say never. In the meantime, only buy white goods from retailers who will. They may get the message then.

Well I fair bought a new washing machine from Dixons, and they want an extra tenner to take my old one and scrap it. I don't mark so. If I can get it to a scrap merchant who will give me some money for it I will do it myself and pocket the money.

So in answer to your question, it seems like no it's not "law" yet for them to take it.

Recycling appliances that can't be charged any more.?

I have electrifying scissors and an electric broom that can't be charged anymore. Nothing happens when they are plugged into their charger. How do I repair these or do I have to put out them away?

Take them at a distance, ussually the battery packs are "custom" but are ussually just AA or AAA rechargeables welded together and retreat from wrapped.

Might require some electrical skills to do so.

We started a recycling business that caters to the community and are looking for advertising advice?

My fellow and I are looking how to go about getting exposure and being able to get noticed in the community. We are trying to Recycle used appliances and other items that people would otherwise jerry-build away as far as we know it has not been tried as a legitimate business. It is generally a picking up trash from the curb. We would rather see the in the open call us for free pick up. The public has been somewhat receptive to us although not real warm on the idea considering most people that are doing this are looked at as litter picking bums. I along with my partner want to try to change this image and become a profitable part of the economy and in time be expert to hire help we need exposure any advice would be helpfull Don from You Call We Haul Midland Michigan

Why not bid the reason or a reason for the service. Such as "we save you time and money by picking it up for you. " "Don't neglect time trying to wheel and deal with the local trash service to pick up those large items, we can support. " (here it costs at least $20 for large item pickup...per item!) "let us expropriate in our part with keeping a clean and healthy environment" (people are big on keeping the planet clean, get some statistics on how extensive it takes to decompose for items you pick up on a regular basis).

If you go to your local chamber of commerce (if you have one) they can in the main do direct mailing flyers. If you have a drop off recycle center in town, maybe print some flyers and stake them on their boxes. A big time for the newspaper ads would be during tax season and warmer weather days when you see garage sales etc. Call the town cable company and see how much they would charge for a commercial and what would be required (i.e. if you do it would it be cheaper or how much if they helped or did it). Radio is one of the worst ways to do it because it only appeals one of their senses. Unshackled boards at supermarkets are a good way as well. Be sure to use the yellow pages (problem is the ad can only be changed once a year). Try to get hooked up onto internet yellowpages as well. Perhaps create a website (cheap and brief) and find a way to have it be googled. Billboards in the area might be another cost effective way of getting your name out there... sometimes, depending on the parade-ground, it'll only cost about 100 a month to have one. Try to sponsor a local area function such as a baseball get or a football team. Anyway you can assist with any public function is always a good publicity scheme. Call the local intelligence station and ask if they'd like to do a story on recycling and how you're helping, some more good publicity. Another form of edible publicity can be donating the things fixed to goodwill or something.
