E.g. Could I use an 11w ESL (interchangeable to a normal 60w bulb in terms of light emitted) in an appliance rated 40w?

I would assume that the rating refers to the actual power used, not the brightness (which is basically the only way that bulb is equivalent to a 60W bulb), and I have reach-me-down 60W equivalents in 40W sockets since 2 years ago.... my house is still standing

Hi,

The appliance rating is on the whole the power it can provide to the bulb, I believe. Therefore, it can only safely give the bulb 60w. If you're putting in an 11w bulb, it should be fine because it's under 60w.

Although if you desideratum a specific output from your bulb, I would check that the manufacturer says it's equivalent to 60w bulb.

When you say appliance are you referring to putting a bulb into an appliance like an over or refrigerator? If so, in blended you need to get a specific bulb that is designed to be used in the appliance, I don't know if CFL and other energy efficient bulbs are designed for that. I put a non appliance bulb in a refrigerator years ago and it lasted about a week before it burned out.
